Tossing Makeup

I don't care how old it is, I hate hate hate throwing away makeup that is not completely empty! I actually keep it long after the expiration date, even if I don't use it any more. Just because I don't want to throw it away. But I just went through and tossed a bunch of well expired products. Below is a guideline of when to throw out your makeup. I admit, I totally don't follow these guidelines to the letter. And neither should you. You should keep them in mind, but if you notice your makeup going off before or after the time given, then, well, use your own judgment.

Going off: smelling funky, changes in texture.

When To Throw Your Makeup Away by Beauty Bunny
  • Mascara: Three months at most. Most of us have kept mascara longer than this, but once you’ve used the wand and put it back in the tube, it becomes a bacterial haven. (And if you ever had any sort of infection while you used a product, NEVER reuse it or you risk re-infecting yourself. Eww.)
  • Cream eyeshadow, eyeliner or blush: Six months. These have a much shorter shelf life than their powder counterparts.
  • Foundation, finishing powder and lipstick: One year. That said, if you see any changes in these products’ consistency, texture or scent, toss them immediately. Foundation can have a shorter life of only 4-6 months, depending on the batch - if it starts separating, give up on it. Even if you shake it up so it mixes together (a trick all my cheapy girlfriends will know about!), it won’t stay that way long, and within an hour of wear it’ll melt off your face. Plus, why would you want to wear something expired? Gross.
  • Nail polish: One year. This depends on the quality of the polish; the $1 drugstore stuff that starts separating in the bottle as soon as you get it home probably won’t make it a whole year.
  • Powder blush or eyeshadow: Two years. This assumes you never share your makeup with any of your grubby friends and you always apply it directly to a clean face with clean hands.
  • Pencil liners: Three years, if sharpened regularly (and applied with clean hands and blah blah).
  • Makeup brushes: Two years. This assumes you shampoo them regularly (we recommend about once a month - unscented soap or baby shampoo will do) and sanitize them between uses. There are special sanitizing sprays for this, but the girls at the MAC counter simply rub them down with alcohol.
  • Makeup sponges: One month. Yep, I said it - even with cleaning after every use (which you should do). Just like the sponges by your kitchen sink, makeup sponges collect bacteria like a ten year old collects Pokemon cards. This includes those right triangle shaped ones you put on foundation with and the tiny ghetto eye makeup sponges your eyeshadow comes with.

I toss my stuff when it starts to smell funky or not apply properly.

Ways that I don't follow the rules: I NEVER toss out nail polish! Never never. I have polish that I bought in high school. Yeah, the texture is way different and it got all thick and hard to spread. What to do: put a little nail polish remover in there and shake it up! It thins it out properly and you can use it again.
I keep mascara past the 3 mo deadline, but never more than, say, 6 months. I've never had an eye infection due to this. Of course, if you do have an eye infection, toss out your mascara straight away. I don't care if it's brand new!
I've only had one lipstick go rancid on me. And it was about 6 years old. Yeah, I didn't use it that often, so I didn't care when I had to throw it away. I definitely keep my lipstick for longer than a year. I have heard that you can keep them for up to four years, as long as it doesn't go off.

Another helpful hint is knowing about the Period After Opening symbol:

Many cosmetic companies include this symbol on there products including Cover Girl, Prestige, Rimmel, Nars, etc (this list was found by pawing through my eyeshadows). These are all pressed eyeshadows. Cover Girl says 36 months, Prestige says 12 months, Rimmel says 30 months, Nars says 24 months. See even the companies can't make up their minds!

It's always sad throwing out makeup, but it's better than getting a breakout or something worse!

Simple Makeup Routine

So, this is the makeup I wear on a daily basis. So, basically, the reason I don't do an FOTD more is because most days it looks like this. So this is my FOTD for everyday you don't see one. :-)

Only the six products you see below. The lip product and the blush changes from time to time. Below are pictured ELF Tone Correcting Concealer in Tone 2, ELF Healthy Glow Bronzing Powder in Luminance, ELF Natural Radiance Blusher in Glow, ELF Super Glossy Lip Shine in Watermelon, Max Factor Waterproof 2000 Calorie Mascara in Rich Black and Max Factor Silk Perfection Makeup in Cool Bronze.

5-year-old Hannah's Makeup Look

You've never seen anything so cute!!! This is AllThatGlitters21's little sister. This is the info from the description box
Me and Blair's littlest sister, Hannah, doing her own Make Up Video. She was so proud of it I had to put it online! It was filmed in the summer and I came across the footage today :)

P.S. She is only 5!

Disclaimer: She does not wear makeup on a regular basis. After all, she is only 5. This was kinda a joke thing and she wanted to be a "big girl" and make a video.

Tag: Hit Pan

This is taken from Xteeener's Hit Pan Tag / Giveaway. But I've already entered and I wanted to post this on my blog, too, for those of you who don't follow me on YouTube.

What are some products you've hit pan on?
Why did you hit pan?
Will you be purchasing again?

So, here are the products I've hit pan on:
Going clockwise: I see two Cover Girl compacts,
a Lorac Palette, a Max Factor compact, and
an ELF compact that's not looking too hot.

Let's open them up:

Again going clockwise:
  • Okay, the first Cover Girl compact is Cover Girl Clean Pressed Powder in Creamy Natural. I bought this a loooong time ago. It's WAY too light for me, but it's perfect as a matte highlight on my face!
  • This is a Cover Girl Tanfastic Bronzer in Soleil. It's a medium brown shade (as far as bronzers go) and has hint of shimmer that makes it perfect for the summer.
  • Next is one of the first high-end things I ever bought. This is the Lorac Paparazzi Palette. For a long time this was the only blush I used. It's one of my darker blushes but it goes on so perfectly. Lurve it
  • I use this Max Factor Silk Perfection makeup EVERY DAY! I love it! Although, when it's gone I'm going to try out some other things that I need to use up.
  • This ELF Healthy Glow Bronzing Powder in Luminance is something else that I use every day. I sweep it along my cheek bones before I put on blush to give a slight golden shimmer to my blush. It's not dark at all (or else I wouldn't be putting it on my cheek bones)
Okay, those are some things I've hit pan on! What about you? I actually don't have anything I've hit pan on because of it not being good, but I know that is the case for some people -- e.g., an eyeshadow that you had to apply a LOT for the color to really show up or a nail polish that you had to use 4-5 coats every time to avoid a VNL (Visible Nail Line). Hit pan does not have to mean an actual pan. The product could be lip gloss or nail polish (as mentioned above) that you ran out of for one reason or another.

First MAC Experience

On Saturday Nov 15, I popped my MAC cherry. This is a look using Landscape Green Pigment and Primary Yellow Pigment. I purchased samples from All Beauty!
First, I used Two Faced Shadow Insurance on my whole lid. I used Landscape green all across my crease. After that, Primary Yellow went over the whole lid and blend it all together. As you can see in the photo below, I didn't blend it all out so great. Oh well. Next, an NYC pencil (gosh I don't remember what kind of pencil or the color, but it was a tealish color) to line my lids and on my water line. This baby STAYED. I was pleased.
So, this was the same day that I had my free Estee Lauder makeup done. It was the blockbuster weekend or something, I don't know. Anyway, the woman asked me "what kind of eyeshadow is this?" I told her it was MAC. She nodded, "Yeah, I thought so. There's so much pigment" and, she said that it was sticking really really well. Took her a while to get all the eyeshadow off.

I used some MAC again on Friday and today. On Friday, I used Fuschia and Black pigments alone with a shimmery white L'Oreal Perle color to do a smokey pink eye. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures. Today, I used Jardin Aires on my inner half of my lid and Melon on my outer half and blended those together. They blended so so easy. Landscape Green was DIFFICULT to blend!!!! Next was exciting, I decided to use my small pink Taklon Coastal Scents brush that, I think, is marketed as a lip brush, I used it for eyeliner today. I wet the brush with some Visine and used my black shadow from my CS 78-pc palette. OMG! It was amazing! It's so soft, yet it's firm. Not like the one I've been using which is pokey. But this one is densely packed, so, you know, the bristles don't have to be hard to be firm! Wow, I love this brush!!!

Anyway, I've already taken my makeup off. :-( Oh well.

I've been loving my foray into MAC. I really love the pigments. I can't wait until my birthday. I'm going to ask Kevin for some of the Hello Kitty collection (we're doing my birthday late, same time as his, because he is broke, my poor babe. We are poor college students).

And, now, I'm going to bed. GOOD NIGHT!!!!

Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick in Twinkle Pink

Really quick note on this lipstick:

Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick in Twinkle Pink

I got it for free when I went to the Blockbuster Makeover Event. I love it!

Awesomeness #1- It EXACTLY matches my hair color! Holy Crap! I love it!
Awesomeness #2- Stays on like heck. I just ate dinner and I can still feel it on my lips. And it's not like I just had something simple. I had pasta, people. And it stayed on.
Awesomeness #3- Even when I can't feel it on anymore, I can still see the lipstick color pretty darn well. Stains my lips a bit. I really like that. I hate having to reapply.

Okay, that's all for now. I'm going to go to Waffle House with some buds.

Personal Commitments

I'm taking this from Lollipop26's blog. A list of commitments for one's personal health and beauty:

  • Keep on top of my eyebrows-- yeah, I know we all do this sometimes. Pluck/trim/shape and then let them go for a few weeks. Oops!
  • Use the makeup I have instead of buying more. Ooooh, I've been really good at this! I've limited myself to nail and brow products. Really, all I want in the brow dept. is some actual brow powder and some stencils. I haven't bought any mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, in a few weeks.
  • Use my Ly-Na pearl paste EVERY night!
  • Weekly manicures! I really want to keep on my nails. I feel like if I keep my nails painted, then I'll pick at them less. My cuticles are a mess right now.
  • Even when I don't wear a full face, wear mascara and lip gloss. Who doesn't want to feel pretty every day.
  • Drink more water and eat less junk! I've actually lost 5 lbs! It's very motivating. I'm trying to eat less pasta and more veggies.
  • No caffeine after 6 pm (unless I don't have to get up the next morning) and at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Ooooh I'm so bad at this. But I know that it's not health to not get sleep. It can even make you break out.
  • STOP FORGETTING MY MEDICINE.
Do you have any commitments you need/want to make?

New Brows

I need to upload some pictures of this, but I'll do that later. I've recently taken to trimming and shaping my brows. The difference is phenomenal. Looks so great! When I wear makeup (which is mostly) I fill in my brows with a bit of black powder (just been using eyeshadow). But, only a very little so it's not too dark. I think I may switch to dark brown, see how that looks. I'm looking for some brow stencil shapers, because I don't want to accidentally end up shaping and trimming my brows to be too thin while doing it free hand. I suppose Sally sells them?

Anyway, just to let you know (TIFFANY) that I'm not buying any makeup except for nail and brow products until after Christmas. Maybe it will break me of the habit. :-)

Beauty Survey

I found this survey on EmilyNoel83's Beauty Broadcast. I thought I would fill it out. Why don't you fill it out too! Fill it out in your blog and leave me a link or fill it out in the comments.

♥Beauty Favorites♥

Make Up:
My Foundation: Wet'n'Wild liquid foundation in Cafe; it's got eucalyptis oil in in which smells awesome. Goes on really awesome with my CS pink stippler.

My Mineral Foundation: Everyday Minerals: and Coastal Scents minerals. EM: I like Golden Fawn; CS: I mix Silk 1.2 Light and Medium. Don't use these too often.

My Mascara: Too many to pick from! My go-to mascara is Max Factor's 2000 Calorie. Makes my lashes FAT. haha

My Blush: I LOVE Amuse Shimmer Mineral Blush in Coral and Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush in Peach Satin. Those mousse blushes blend so beautifully!!!

My Eyeshadow(s): I love my CS 78 pc palette and LA Colors shimmering loose shadows. I also make my own shadows (video coming soon!)

My Favorite Fashion Publication(s): Glamour and Allure!

New VS Catalog!

I just got the Fall 2008 Victoria's Secret Catalog. It's a casual fall collection filled with plunging necklines, adorable sweaters, and jeans that look GREAT on HER butt in the picture, but probably less so on mine.

In addition is the beauty pages! Did you know VS carries DuWop? I didn't before a few minutes ago. This catalog features DuWop Prime Venom: "a plumping lip balm that provides a matte finish and also works as a primer." I don't know about you, but I absolutely adore DuWop Lip Venom. Maybe Santa will bring me a Benet's gift card for Christmas. Benet's is a store in downtown Greenville that carries NARS, DuWop, Lorac, and other high end brands. Or maybe Santa will bring me a VS gift card so I can check out more of their items. Like the Beauty Rush brand! I love it! I have one lip gloss which is a little sticky, but the color is lovely and I WANT MORE. Beauty Rush also carries cream eyeshadows that I'd love to try.

There is also this brand I've never heard of: Global Goddess. The Tribal Quad Eyeshadow palettes are gorgous and come in Arusha (browns), Eldoret(pinks), or Mombasa(blues and greens). The Chai Cheek Color in Mikrik is described as a coral shade but it appears to be a raspberry in the catalog. On the website it looks properly coral. A beautiful pearly shade. There is also the Goddess Glow South Pacific Shimmer. The compact has gold bronze and shimmery nude with a neat silver pattern. There is also a Lip Veil in Casbah, and I'm a sucker for lip glosses. It's a shimmery pinkish gold... which happens to be my favorite color combo. Pink with gold shimmer... oooh always wonderful.

TKB Trading

I've wanted to do for quite a while is try and make my own makeup. I'm getting a lot of stuff for X-mas, but I thought I'd get some samples and try it out on my own. So, I decided, when I get paid, I'd buy some sample ingredients to experiment with.

Guess what! I got paid!!! From TKB Trading, I got the Pop! Mica Sampler ($9) and the Metallic Collection Sampler ($5.4). I may get a couple things from Coastal Scents, too. They have samplers for the fillers and additives and for the oxides that are about $10 each. I'll post a haul when I get them in and then show some of my experiments.

These are the Coastal Scents oxide and filler sampler sets. I don't have any pix for the TKB stuff I got because their pix are messing up right now. I'll take my own pix and post them when it comes in.

Jesse's Girl

Yay! I have my very first Jesse's Girl products!!! They started carrying them in Rite Aid of all places. I picked up two eyeshadows.
Volcanic and Evergreen. Also comes in Earthtone and Aqua

Swatches, beautiful!!
Evergreen. Green with gold veining.
Volcanic. Dark rosy pink with lighter pink veining.
Evergreen on my eye. There's nothing else on my eye. With a base, it would look a lot better. I'm giving my eyes a rest because I was playing with a lot of looks yesterday. I'll put up some pics later.

Inexpensive Eye Shadows

I did a look on my eyes using (except for the mascara) ONLY wet 'n' wild products. If I had thought about it, I'd have used my Wet 'n' Wild mascara, but my Lash Blast was lying right there!!! This is just to show that, if you use a decent eye primer, cheap eye shadow can look good too!

The products I used:

Cover Girl Lash Blast in Brown Black, Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Kajal Eye Liner in Sky Blue, Wet 'n' Wild Mega Eyes in Island Blues, and Mary Kay Signature Eye Primer

Max Factor Liquid to Powder Makeup in Cool Bronze, E.L.F. Natural Radiance Blusher in Shy, and Maybelline Shiny-Licious lip gloss in Coral Punch.

First, of course, put on your moisturizer, foundation, etc. Dab a bit of the Mary Kay eye primer on your eyelids and blend in gently using your ring or middle finger. Apply the medium blue shade of eye shadow to the inner half of your eyelid. Next, apply the dark blue shade to the outer half. Blend together using the brush you used for the light blue shade. The dark blue shade is matte, so it will make it a little more shimmery. Sweep the lightest shade under the eyebrow to highlight the brow bone. Blend in gently with the other colors.

Next, line your lower lid with the blue liner. (In retrospect, I think Silver Blue would've worked better. Oh well.) Set it with the medium blue eyeshadow. Curl your lashes and apply mascara.

My first tutorial

Okay, well Tiffany says I should do a tutorial. I don't really know how to do one, but here goes anyway.

Here are all the products I used. Some are probably harder to find, but you can use a substitute. Face: Physician's Formula Circle Rx in Soft Yellow, Amuse Foundation Stick in Medium Beige, Avon Translucent Loose Powder in Medium, E.L.F. Natural Radiance Blusher in Glow;
Eyes: Mary Kay Signature Eye Primer, L'Oreal HiP Color Rich Cream Eye Crayon in Attentive, Fresh Minerals Eye Shadow in Copper and Shell, Color Compact Charming Eyes Eyeshadow Trio, NYC Eyeliner Duet in Mockingbird, Covergirl Volume Exact mascara in Very Black;
Lips: Amuse Sweet Heart Lipstick in Orange Red.

So, of course, always begin with a clean face, moisturize your face.
First, I used Physician's Formula Circle Rx under my eyes to cover up any circles. Just dab the product under your eye, then blend in with your ring finger. It puts the least pressure so you won't pull on the skin around your eye so much. Next I used the foundation stick and a concealer brush to cover up any blemishes. Sometimes, I use this all over my face, but today, I just used it as a concealer. Then I swept the translucent powder all over my face with a big face brush.

Next, eyes: Start by putting a primer all over your lid and wherever you will be putting on eyeshadow. So, all the way up to the brow. This will keep your shadow from creasing and it will stay vivid all day. I colored my lid with the HiP cream crayon. It's pictured below so you can pick out something similar. It's a coppery gold sort of color. Second, I took the medium shade from the trio (pictured below) and put it on the inner third of my eye. Next, the darkest shade from the trio on the middle third. Blend as you go. On the outer corner of my eye, I used the Copper mineral shadow. Blend in and soften any harsh edges around your lid. I used the Shell mineral shadow to highlight my brow bone.

Left: The trio, use the bottom two colors
Top Fresh Mineral Shadow in Shell
Right: Fresh Mineral Shadow in Copper
Bottom: HiP Cream Crayon in Attentive

Amuse Sweet Heart Lipstick in Orange Red (what a lame name)

A swatch of the lipstick without flash

E.L.F. Natural Radiance Blusher in Glow

Next, line your lids with a black eye liner. I just used the black half of the eyeliner duet. Line your whole top lip and the outer 3/4s of your lower lid. On the inner corner of your lower lid, line that with white. Now, take a small eyeshadow brush and use the copper again, set the black liner on your lower lid. Using the Shell mineral shadow, set the white liner. Curl your lashes and apply mascara.

Apply the blush to the apples of your cheek and sweep upward toward the top of your ear.

I feel like lipstick is self explanitory.

If you'll notice the color of my eyebrow in this pic? Yeah, I wanted to see what it looked like, my natural brows with my pink hair, so I blacked it with mascara. Does not look good....

Playing with eye makeup

While I'm here, I'll put up a couple pics of some eye looks I've done recently.

I used the L.A. Colors palette in Serenade to do this, but I don't remember what I did! I just wanted to show it because it looks so awesome.

This was another L.A. Colors palette: Soiree. This picture is also modified with Picasa. You'll notice that around the edges are not colored, all the color is on the eye. Also, I upped the saturation.
I followed xteeener's tutorial to get this look.
Excuse the funky eyebrows. Facewash is not color safe. I have to redye them soon.
Another xteeener tutorial. While looking at these pics, you may notice I'm not that great with eyeliner. So, excuse that, plz.
